Fire Safety influences various aspects of the built environment – from the design of modern skyscrapers to the materials chosen to fabricate aeroplanes. These programmes equip Engineers and Engineering Students with the necessary fundamental skills and knowledge to develop comprehensive Fire Safety Strategies for a broad range of projects. The areas of study include the fundamental processes governing ignition, fire growth, and the behaviour of structures during and after a fire. The course programme develops the design principles required for applying Fire Safety Engineering in the built environment.

The University of Queensland offers distinct programmes in Fire Safety Engineering:

 

BE(Hons)/ME in Civil and Fire Safety Engineering

The Bachelor (Honours) and Master of Engineering, 5-year full-time program (80 units) combines Civil Engineering with additional courses in Fire Safety Engineering. The combined degree provides one course in year 3, two courses in year 4, and three courses in year 5. In addition, to obtain the BE-ME, students will be required to take an 8-unit Research Thesis in the area of Fire Safety Engineering (FIRE7500).

MEngSc in Fire Safety Engineering

The 24-unit program (1.5 years full-time and 3 years part-time) Master of Engineering Science in Fire Safety Engineering covers key Fire Safety Engineering courses. This program equips students with the necessary fundamental skills and knowledge to develop comprehensive Fire Safety Strategies for a broad range of projects. The program also covers 8 units of courses in other engineering disciplines. In addition, during semesters 2 and 3, students will be required to take a 4-unit Research Thesis in the area of Fire Safety Engineering (FIRE7511).

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses

The University of Queensland regularly offers CPD courses in Fire Safety Engineering.

  • External Fire Spread Risk in Tall Building Design (1st edition: January 2018 ; 2nd edition: April 2018 ; 3rd edition in 2019)
    The purpose of this course is to provide practising engineers with the specialist knowledge to address the fire safety strategy of buildings and understand the implications of using ACP products capable of supporting vertical flame spread. The provision of design solutions for buildings requires competent fire engineers with the understanding of the key fundamentals regarding the fire safety strategy, façade design, and the interactions between a façade and the building in the event of a fire.

 

International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE)

The University of Queensland is an Associated Partner of the IMFSE. Every year an IMFSE student is hosted at UQ for their 4th semester focused on developing a research thesis (30 credits) supervised by the academics in the Fire Safety Engineering Research Group.

Graduate Certificate in Fire Safety (GCFS)

Currently only available to Australian Fire and Emergency Services

The 8-unit program Graduate Certificate in Fire Safety has been developed with (and tailored to) the needs of the Australian Fire Services. The three-week intensive programme provides the opportunity for professionals in fire safety to broaden their knowledge, skills and practice – and to develop their careers. The Graduate Certificate introduces core concepts in the assessment and delivery of a fire safety strategy, together with emerging directions and innovative practices. Students also complete an “in work” project that allows them to develop and apply their new knowledge and skills in a practical environment and under the mentorship of academic staff.

Currently, this program is available only to applicants proposed by Australian Fire and Rescue Services.
