Confirmation seminar presented by Jinming Zhang

This research focuses on the development of the Hencky bar-chain model (HBM) for the elastic buckling analysis and optimization of arches and archgrids for maximum buckling capacity. Previous studies employing HBM predominantly addressed in-plane buckling problems involving funicular arches. This research extends the HBM application to any arch shape, loading and support conditions; including non-funicular arches and delves into their optimal designs against in-plane buckling and out-of-plane buckling. Additionally, the research aims to bridge the gap in current knowledge by formulating optimal design strategies for stability of archgrids, contributing significantly to the field of structural optimization design for this class of structures. The study developed a novel numerical method for easy analysis and optimization to achieve a better understanding of the buckling phenomena of arch structures.

About Confirmation Seminars

The purpose of the confirmation milestone is to ensure that the candidate receives appropriate feedback in relation to the viability and progress of the thesis project and that the resources required to complete the program of research within the recommended timeframe are available. It is also an opportunity to ensure that the candidate has demonstrated the capacity and capability to successfully complete the thesis in a timely manner.
