Developing an Integrated Framework to Assess and Evaluate Life Cycle and Carbon Emission Costs of Office Buildings in Australia

Although Green Building Rating Systems have become the main environmental performance assessment tools for buildings, these tools cannot lead to comparison and choice of different design solutions satisfying conflicting criteria such as economic and energy performance. This study aims to contrive to provide an easy-to-use tool for designers to compare environmental cost and carbon performances of different design solutions in the early design phase. The tool enables designers to assess embodied carbon emission and operational carbon emission of the design alternatives independently and simultaneously, from their conception to their disposal, integrating a decision-making matrix into Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment.
