Development of a Novel Smouldering-Based Method for Targeted Resource Recovery from Sewage Sludge

Considering the existing economic and practical limitations of existing sludge management strategies as well as the increasing concerns for the presence of emerging contaminants present in sludge, there is a general interest for more cost-effective technologies that can achieve complete dewatering of the sludge and can effectively ‘destroy’ emerging contaminants such as PFAS. Moreover, as we are entering an era of the circular economy, new sludge management approaches should allow for the recovery of valuable resources embedded in the sludge.

The potential of smouldering has never been tested, providing this research an opportunity to explore the technical and economic potential of smouldering combustion as a novel treatment technology for sludge.
