Mateo is a Civil Engineer interested in topics related to the use of novel construction and building materials, mainly in systems using timber and Bamboo. He has vast experience in structural design of Bamboo structures and also traditional concrete systems. For the last 6 year, Mateo worked in research projects related to the design of load-bearing Bamboo structures and the mechanical properties of bamboo (Guadua angustifolia Kunth species) . Currently, he is an active member of the SIBGUADUA research network, and contributes in the organization of the International Symposiums of Bamboo and Guadua. Prior to joining UQ Fire, Mateo teached undergraduate courses and supervised research project at Universidad de la SalleUniversidad Militar Nueva Granada, and Universidad La Gran Colombia (Bogota, Colombia) in the areas of Materials Science, Structural Analysis, and Material Testing.

Projects

The Potential for Engineered Bamboo in Structural Applications

This research project aims at identifying the mechanical and physical properties of bamboo as structural material, and its effect in the structural analysis of bamboo structures. Deliver methods for design and construction of structural bamboo systems. Evaluate the use of bamboo as the main structural material in unconventional or modular structural systems. Propose structural systems and some other types of protection to improve the fire performance in bamboo structures. Implement and validate new techniques and data for testing fire resistance of structural and non-structural elements used in the construction of buildings in bamboo, which allow to compare those results with results obtained by conventional assays, as well as compare the results found for bamboo with timber data. Complement and improve existing codes and regulations in the structural design of elements in bamboo.
