Carmen obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, specialized in bridges and underground constructions, in 2013 in Poland. Then, she was awarded with the “Erasmus Mundus Scholarship” and accepted in the “International Master of Fire Safety Engineering” program. That opportunity gave her the chance to study in UK, Belgium, and Sweden, offering her the access to the discipline of Fire Safety Engineering.

Self-extinguishment of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in Multi-Scale Compartment Fires

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is an engineered timber product that recently has awaken the interest of the construction industry. Due its convenient strength to weight ratio, manufacturing process and its aesthetics - different entities started to push towards building with CLT. But, this scenario leads to a new fire hazard; Engineers are facing now a problem where the fuel load is much greater and the structure is subjected to a thermal decomposition process. On the other hand, it is also known that burning timber will eventually self-extinguish if it is not subjected to an additional external heat source. Therefore, this research is seeking on how to use the property of self-extinguishment of timber in CLT structures. Because, self-extinguishment is the only tool that engineers have in order to design fire safety projects for this kind of structures.
