Welcome to the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland.

Civil engineers are responsible for planning and constructing the environment in which we live. They are trained to plan, design, construct and maintain the facilities which contribute to our modern way of life. Civil engineers must understand material strength, water flow, foundation capacities, breaking waves, transport and environmental interactions, contamination and treatment.  Not only must they be well informed about the sciences, they must also apply their theoretical knowledge to create economical, sustainable and aesthetically-pleasing facilities which satisfy the demands of society.

Civil and environmental engineering have crucial roles to play in defining the world’s future. In the coming decades the world will face significant global issues including the challenges of sustainably providing food, water, energy and infrastructure for rapidly growing and urbanising populations while minimising the impacts of waste and pollution. Civil and environmental engineers will be called on to develop the innovative solutions to these and other issues facing society.

UQ’s School of Civil Engineering provides students with a strong foundation for their careers. Our undergraduate programs emphasise essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, project management and problem-solving while postgraduate programs meet the needs of professionals by helping them to develop the skills they need to advance their careers.

Housing 17 academic staff, including six Professors, the School’s staff represent a diverse range of research interests ranging from coastal and hydraulic engineering and structural engineering through to transportation engineering and resource management. The School’s academic staff are recognised leaders in their areas of specialisation, and receive many invitations to undertake high level consultancy for industry and government.

Graduates of the School can be found all over the world, working at all levels of government and industry. Our alumni are taking leading roles in helping to build cleaner and sustainable industries, provide waste and pollution control and guide improved resource management.

With the job market yielding many opportunities both nationally and internationally, it’s an exciting time to be a civil or environmental engineer. Studying at UQ’s School of Civil Engineering will prepare you for a successful career in a field that is expanding and evolving along with the world in which we live.
