The School of Civil Engineering offers specialist consulting services in the following areas:

Structural testing & instrument calibration

The School of Civil Engineering operates a well equipped Structures Laboratory with a variety of load test machines of varying capacity (0 to 500tonnes - compression & 0 to 200 tonnes - tension). These machines are regularly used for:

  • Strength testing
  • Dynamic loading for fatigue studies

Concrete testing

The School of Civil Engineering operates a well equipped Concrete Laboratory capable of the complete range of strength and shrinkage tests. Specialist testing services offered include:

  • Large scale creep testing
  • Fatigue testing
  • Independent testing of new cementitious products

Wind tunnel testing

The School of Civil Engineering operates several wind tunnels including a large boundary layer wind tunnel, 3m wide by 2m high. These wind tunnels are regularly used for:

  • Wind environment studies
  • Wind loading studies on buildings and structures
  • Calibration of anemometers and other air flow meters

Hydraulic and coastal engineering

The School of Civil Engineering provides professional services through leading world-experts and physical modelling facilities in the Gordon McKay Hydraulics Laboratory on the St Lucia campus.

Geomechanics

The School of Civil Engineering operates a well equipped Geomechanics Laboratory, including field testing equipment. These facilities are regularly used for sophisticated lab testing, field testing and trials.

Traffic and transportation engineering

The School of Civil Engineering provides professional services through the state-of-the-art Intelligent Transport Systems and Traffic Laboratory and the Centre for Transport
